DIY - Modern Fish Tank.

Hi Everyone!

I've been on the hunt for a new fish tank. I have a pretty long table behind my main living room couch and figured a nice fish tank would pretty much fix the empty dead space on one end of the table.

Now, I didn't want the traditional rectangular shaped fish tank that everyone knows of. I wanted something different... one that would stand out. Of course, every tank I found online that was different or close enough to what I was looking for was *super* expensive.
After hours of searching and finally picking out two that I liked, in the end I just couldn't justify paying so much $$$ for a fish tank to just fill an empty space in my living room.
So, I just held off in my search hoping that maybe at some point I would miraculously come across a more inexpensive one by accident.

And so I did!
Sort of.

I was at Home Goods one day browsing some spring decor and suddenly, there it was! My new fish tank.

I picked up these large cylinder jars (or vases?) and knew they were perfect. They aren't exactly "fish tanks" but they were deep and thick enough to pull off a nice size tank.

Here is an example of the Large Jars I saw.

You can find these Tall Glass Jars at most HomeGoods like I did, or at Marshalls & TJ-Maxx. Even Hobby Lobby has some nice ones.

++ When picking one out to use as a fish tank, check it for any cracks or noticeable scratches. The glass needs to be thick, but not *too* thick where its blurry when you look through it. Also make sure it's tall and wide enough inside to allow your tank accessories to fit in perfectly (filter, heater, decorations and of course the fish). ++

The one I purchased is 16-inches tall and 28.5-inches round. At only $14.00 bucks I walked out of the store feeling like a "boss". ;)

The next day I went to my local pet store and I asked one of the reps there if I could actually pull this off. After giving him the height, width and thickness of the glass jar, he approved and right away proceeded to help me pick out a filter and water heater for my tank.

below is the filter and heater I purchased.

City.Chic.Love.
Supreme Ovation - 210 Submersible Power Jet Filter | Price: $18.00

City.Chic.Love.
Marina Submersible Aquarium Heater. 25w | Price:$13.00

I did of course pick out a lovely plant and a bag of rocks to decorate my tank. ;)

To set up, I followed the simple steps as you would in setting up any new regular fish tank.
+ I placed the heater and filter in my tank.
+Then place my decorative rocks and my decorative flower in.
+ I filled the tank with water.
+ I let the water filter run overnight.

After allowing the filter to run for a full 24 hours, I headed back to the pet shop to pick out my new fish.
At first, I thought I would end up buying some traditional fish (since my main focus was a nice tank from the beginning). Just as I was getting ready to select some, I noticed there was a glowing tank towards the end of the fish section. I immediately walked over and saw these super fun glowing fish.

City.Chic.Love.

As you can only guess, I asked about them and the store rep said all I needed to make them glow was a neon light. He showed me some lights and next thing you know I walked out with my new pets.

City.Chic.Love.
GloFish Blue LED Bubbler | Price: $11.00

Now, I had a minor issue with the glow light. I didn't want to put it inside the tank because I didn't really like how all the bubbles pretty much blurred the inside of the tank. After trying a few times, not exactly sure where to place it, I ended up putting it right on top of the filter and heater cable. Go-Figure!

Its not exactly sturdy there, but it does stay, and it actually looks perfect.

And here it is. My new D.I.Y. Fish Tank.

What do you guys think?

Here is a shot of it glowing in the dark.

It was super easy. Super inexpensive. Super fun.
It came out better than I expected. Simple, Unique, and Modern.

Now the end of my table is complete!

The *only* thing I am not a big fan of is the cables from the filter and heater that hang behind the glass tank. Luckily they are thin and slim enough where you can barely see them. Plus, because the tank is in front of the wall, pulling the cables behind the tank hides them well.
Other than that, I'm extremely happy with the way it all came out.

 Hope you guys enjoy!

Beauty Missions: - Still The Best. Macadamia Deep Repair Hair Masque.

I just received my *8th* tub of Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque.

When I first tried this hair mask I saw results in the shower as soon as I applied it on my hair. I was completely pleased and thrilled with the results as it left my hair super soft, frizz-free and smelling amazing.
But after using it for a little over two years, I felt the need to try something new. I wanted to find an alternative or something as just good... or even better, just as good and cheaper!

The Macadamia Natural Oil line of products works wonders but does come at a hefty price tag of about $33.00 per repair mask and that's only if you catch a good deal online, most stores sell it for $5.00 to $10.00 dollars more! Total rip-off.

So my mission was clear, find a new conditoner or hair mask that will give me the same results!

Here is a list of the ones I tried:

Pantene Age Devy Rejuvenating Hydration Masque
price: $14.99
[ this hair mask did nothing for my hair - mission: fail ]
Review

Phyto Restructuring Mask
price: 39.00
[ ok results, but the price tag was not ok. -mission: fail ]

Review

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask.
price: $7.99
[ I purchased a second tub hoping to get better results with more use, but still didn't feel a big difference or change. - mission: fail ]

Review

L'oreal Total Repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm
price: $6.99
[ I was excited to use this one as it was recommend by a friend, but it was basically just like the Neutrogena deep recovery mask. - mission: fail ]

Review

Moroccan Argan Oil Renewing Treatment
price: $7.99
[ smells great and detangled my hair, but that's as much as it did. - mission: fail ]

Review

 Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment
price: $28.00
[ for almost the same price as the Macadamia hair mask, this one doesn't feel as nourishing. mission: fail. ]

Review

Wen by Chaz Dean Bamboo Green Tea Cleansing Conditioner.
price: $27.00
[ I like the way this smells and it leaves a minty-like feeling to your scalp but it does nothing for tangles or frizz. mission: fail ]

Review

I am currently finishing up the Wen Conditioner. I am the type of person that doesn't like to waste products (or money) so I will use every last drop until the container is empty.

Moral of this mission: If you find a product you love, that gives you the results you want, just stick to it! Everyone's hair is different and just because some of these products I listed didn't exactly work for me, it doesn't mean they wont work for you.

I love my Macadamia Deep Repair Hair Masque, I even love the Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment which I use right after I blow dry my hair.
I'm excited and looking forward to having my hair feeling soft, manageable and smelling like the macadamia products again...

* I promise to never leave you again... ;-) *
Review

+ before I leave you guys, I wanted to share a great website that sells the Macadamia Masque at a great price. The 8.5oz tub (that is normally over $26.00-$33.00 everywhere else online)  is only $21.99  at www.thebeautyplace.com Its the best deal I've found online. So if you love it as much as I do or if you are curious to try it, they even sell a Travel Size Pack for a great price.
[ mission: accomplished ]

South Beach. Love. * Best Spots to visit on Lincoln Road *

I fell in love with South Beach Miami the moment I stepped foot on Ocean Drive. I loved it so much I ended up moving there a year after my visit.
South Beach is filled with stores, restaurants and of course nightclubs. Once you peel yourself off the beautiful beach you'll easily find them all within walking distance or a quick cab ride away from one another.

City.Chic.Love.

I wanted to start my first Tour Blog on a very popular place that I believe everyone knows (or at least has heard of) Lincoln Road. Even if you have never been to Miami, Lincoln Road is always next to anything south beach related and you can almost always catch it on TV if anything is being filmed in Miami.

Lincoln Road is a long street (pedestrian only promenade) filled with shops, galleries, restaurants and bars. Anything and Everything you need can be found here. Literally! There's even a local Antiques & Collectibles Market + a Farmers Market every Sunday that sets-up street shops right in the center of it all. Lincoln Road is the best place to visit within walking distance from the beach. One of my favorite things to do there is people watch! I swear its just so chill to sit outside one of the many restaurants or bars and just watch the scene go by.

Now, because there is a plethora of places on Lincoln Road, it can actually get a bit overwhelming. So, I wanted to give you a list of the BEST spots to stop in and visit in My Opinion. Living there has definitely granted me the time to try out all there is there and for that reason, this is my list of Top Favorite places on Lincoln Rd...

+ Shopping - Lincoln Road is packed with every store imaginable, you will find Forever21, Victoria's Secret, H&M, Mac, Guess, BCBG + many more.
But my favorite place to shop is actually the Antiques & Collectible Market that is set up on Sundays. ( you can check out the schedule HERE ). You will find all sorts of vintage clothing, jewelry and antique furniture. It can quickly turn obsessive for anyone who is a lover of rare finds, in a good way of course. ;)

also, not letting actual retail stores slip by, these are my two favorites :
- All Saints. Spitalfields & Anthropologie

+ Food - It will probably take you over 2 weeks to visit every single restaurant on Lincoln Road, so I'll help you skip over all that indecisiveness.

Here are my favorite spots to eat:

Breakfast/Lunch
- Ice Box Cafe. fresh & organic food. what i get there: "European Breakfast"
- Balans. great variety! great brunch place as well. what I get there: The selection of Benedicts are yummy, but the "Nutella Crepe" A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Lunch/Early Dinner
- Doraku. i am not exaggerating when I tell you, that I drool whenever I think about this restaurant. (weirdo. I know) Doraku is my ABSOLUTE favorite restaurant on Lincoln Road, and if you go during Happy Hour you'll snatch a great deal on some of my favorite dishes there.
what i get there: "Spicy Edamame" I am seriously addicted to it. I get it every time I'm in South Beach.

If you're not into sushi, then these are my next two picks:
- Shake Shack. just a Fun and easy place to get a great burger. Oh! don't forget the shake!
- Paul. (Maison de Qualite)this bakery offers a great selection of sandwiches. what i get there: "Tomato & Mozzarella" sandwich.

Coffee/ Dessert
- Nespresso Boutique Bar. i Love the Chic and Modern look and feel of this place. what i get there: and nice cappuccino and macaroons!

for a more Formal (Dress up) Dinner:
- Meat Market. this super sexy Steak House is always great and has an awesome scene. what i get there: "18 ounce New York Cut Steak" drink: " Blackberry Cobbler

- Juvia. this place has one of the best views of south beach, its on a roof top with indoor and outdoor seating and i just love the modern & trendy look of it. i personally like to sit in the patio area. what i get there: "Chilean Sea Bass"

Favorite Bar:
- Segafredo. this is honestly the only place on Lincoln Rd that plays Great Music, has a great vibe (best "people watching" spot!) and offers food and great drinks even at a late hour. Its layed out like a big outdoor Chic living room and its a place that locals love and even celebrities frequent. what i get there: Drinks! "Sangria" always my favorite there.

*sigh* ... writing all of this just makes me want to pack and go! ;)

I hope this little list comes in handy when you visit Lincoln Road.

I left my heart in south beach, this is why I visit every few weeks. I cant get enough...

until next time!

Sunny Weekend !

Finally! A nice weekend in NYC. 50 degrees. Yes. That's pretty "nice" considering how its been these past 2 months.

I decided to switch up some of my makeup for the weekend... and inadvertently purple was the hue.

In the picture:
+ Bobbi Brown BB Cream
+ Tarte - Amazonian Clay 12-Hr Blush in the color " Splendor"
+ EM Cosmetics - Lipstick in "Violaceous" (VERY impressed with this line of makeup)
+ Kevyn Aucoin - The Essential Mascara
+ CHANEL - Le Crayon Khol eye pencil ( I've been using this black eye-liner for years now! My absolute favorite)
+ Mac - Mineralized Skinfinish Natural Powder
+ Zoya - Nail Polish in the color "Odette"
+ Chloe - Perfume ( I love getting these little travel sizes to carry in my purse)

and of course my "Dragonfly Heart" Necklace that is available at my shop City.Chic.Love.

I wanted to show a closer look at the Zoya Nail Polish Color. I almost believe this color is what inspired the rest of the makeup for the weekend.

zoya nail polish
Zoya Nail Polish in "Odette"

One thing I will say about Zoya nail polishes, the color does NOT chip. Two coats of any Zoya polish and that's all you need... and trust me. I am constantly working with my hands ( jewelry making, kids, cooking etc) and it stays on at least for a whole week without chipping. Love it.

I hope everyones weekend was just as great!

February Essentials...

Winter appears to have a bone to pick with us. It's been snowing almost every other day in NYC, which is wild since I barely remember one snow storm around this time last year.

With the current weather being quite brutal in the northeast, I wanted to share my winter essentials with you all. These are some of the main products I keep in my bag on the go.

  • Blistex - Deep Renewal Balm Stick ( I swear this stuff cures chapped lips within minutes!)
  • Stila - Convertible Color Lip & Cheek Cream in the color "Peony" ( this creamy blush lasts all day and is great for my dry cheeks during the winter)
  • CHANEL - Natural Finish Pressed Powder ( I don't like to cake-on foundation and powder every day, on the go I use a tinted BB cream and this powder all over my face. Easy)
  • Nars - Radiant Creamy Concealer ( this concealer is a must. I have heavy under eye dark circles and this concealer, even alone with no other makeup, really covers the circles and refreshes the look of my whole face)
  • Hermes - Osmanthe Yunnan Perfume ( perfect scent to transition into spring. Its the perfect hint of a dark-floral classy scent. Think Chanel Mademoiselle + Dior Cherie together!)
and of course my "Wicked Heart" bracelet which is available at my shop City.Chic.Love.

What are your winter essentials? I'm always curious to check out new products.

Stay Chic!

"Starry Nights"

Hi.

Whenever I start working on a new piece of jewelry I get pretty excited mid-way through the creation and I start taking pictures right away.
I cant help it! I love making jewelry and I love how this one is coming out so far...

I named this one "Starry Nights" because it reminds me of Miami Beach at Night. The Beach, Stars and Ocean Breeze is the inspiration for this necklace. It definitely takes me back to my walks on Collins Ave, heading to the W hotel for some cocktails & lounging. ;-)

I should have this beauty in the SHOP by tomorrow afternoon...

and now, BED TIME. I've been working on designs all day. I have some pretty great jewelry pieces coming out next month and I cant wait to share my inspirations for them with you all.

Goodnight & Stay Chic!
